Buyer Map: Good Work

Prepared for James Brugner | Good Work | October 2026

As of Oct 9, 2026. Counts from published federal statistics on US businesses for 2022, described in the notes at the foot

This page maps the agencies that sell design, advertising, marketing and PR, and may need a web development team behind them when a client wants a new site. Your own work page names projects built alongside agency partners. It counts these agencies by type and size across the United States, then in Texas and in Dallas County, and it names the roles that usually sign off. It says nothing about which of them already work with Good Work.

US agencies of these five types with 5 or more staff

16,000

Companies, 2022. The five rows in the first table added together, so a company in two of these types counts in both.

US advertising agencies with 20 or more staff

1,300

Companies, 2022, sized by everyone the whole company employs.

Agency offices of these five types in Texas

6,100

Offices of every size, 2022. An office is one location.

Advertising agency offices in Dallas County

220

Offices of every size, 2022.

United States, agencies by type and size

Companies with paid staff, sized by everyone the whole company employs, 2022.

Each row is its own type. Agencies with under 5 staff are left out, and most agencies of every type are that small. A company with offices in two of these types is counted in both. Type names are our plain labels for the federal codes in the notes.

Texas and Dallas County, agency offices by type and size

Locations in each place, 2022, sized by the people at that location.

Staff here is the people at the one office, not the whole agency. Where the federal file leaves a size class blank, which it does for any class with fewer than three locations, that class is counted as none, so a cell can read low but never high. Where it blanks every class in a cell, the cell says not published.

Who signs off

The roles that usually choose, or shape the choice of, a development partner at an agency. At a smaller agency one person often holds several of them.

RoleWhy they care
Founder, owner or principalDecides what the agency builds in house and what it hands to a partner, and carries the client relationship when a launch goes wrong.
Managing director or head of operationsOwns delivery, margins and the bench. A partner fills a gap without a new hire.
Creative director or executive creative directorNeeds the site to ship the way it was designed, down to the details.
Head of digital or technology directorJudges the code, the CMS choice and the hosting before the agency puts its name on the work.
Account directorKeeps the client happy through the build and wants clear status updates to pass on.
New business or partnerships leadBrings in pitches that need a build team, and wants a partner who can scope the build with them.

What no public count reaches

Three questions this page cannot answer from a count, said in words rather than shown as numbers.

Which agencies build their own sites. The federal counts sort agencies by what they sell, not by who writes their code, so every row counts each agency whether it builds in house or not.

Which agencies already have a development partner. No public list says who has a standing partner and who hires freelancers project by project.

Which content management system their clients run. That is visible site by site, not in a count, so it comes from the named version of a row.

Three openings

Where the counts point.

Advertising agencies in Dallas County.

Dallas County has about 220 advertising agency offices, about 30 of them with 20 or more staff. That is your home market, close enough to meet.

Design and branding studios across the US.

About 2,100 US graphic design and branding studios have 5 to 19 staff. At 5 to 19 staff, a studio that designs a site may not have the developers to build it. Your work page names builds done alongside partner design teams.

Marketing consultancies in Texas.

Texas has about 3,500 marketing consultancy offices, the most of any type in the Texas column. Most have under 5 staff, so any site build they take on is likely to need outside developers.

Denominators, definitions and sources

  1. United States counts are employer firms in the federal annual statistics of US businesses, 2022. A firm is every location under one owner, sized by paid employees across the whole firm, and counted in each industry where it has a location.
  2. Texas and Dallas County counts are establishments in the federal County Business Patterns for 2022, state and county files. An establishment is one location, sized by the paid employees at that location in the mid-March 2022 pay period. Size classes the file leaves blank are counted as none.
  3. Industry codes: 541810 advertising agencies; 541430 graphic design services; 541613 marketing consulting services; 541820 public relations agencies; 541830 media buying agencies.
  4. Organizations with no paid staff are not counted. Built from published federal statistics, counts banded deliberately. Figures of 100 and over are rounded to two significant figures, figures from 10 to 99 to the nearest ten, and figures below 10 are shown as under 10.

The named version of this page, the actual agencies inside a row, is built one row at a time. If you want to walk through a row together, pick a time at cal.com/ecg. Prepared by Ben Beattie, ben@enquirerconsulting.com.
